3.2.2 Faculty Duties and Workloads

A. Purpose

This document states the institutional policy concerning faculty workloads and responsibility. This policy implements The University of Texas System Board of Regents’ Rules and Regulations, Series 31006 and Texas Education Code, Section 51.402 (b). No part of this policy may be interpreted or implemented in a manner that is inconsistent with those Rules and Regulations or the Education Code.

Faculty.

C. Definitions

Faculty is defined to include all academic ranks.

D. Policy

Faculty members’ duties at the University of Texas at Tyler shall comply with Section 4 of Series 31004 Regents' Rules and Regulations:

  1. Teaching. Teach in the classroom, laboratory, seminar, or clinical setting.
  2. Research. Study, investigate, discover, created, and develop professionally.
  3. Administration. Perform curricular tasks auxiliary to teaching and research, e.g., serving on faculty committees, attending to administrative and disciplinary tasks, fostering intellectual curiosity and integrity in the student body.
  4. Contribution to Society. Use their professional expertise to benefit society.
  5. Practical Operational Assignments: to provide expertise, leadership, analysis, methodology, modeling, programming, or supervision of clinical practice of students, residents or professionals in training to the work involved in the improvement of the operation in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and efficacy to better the human condition.  As for clinicians, operational assignment include, as licensed and credentialed, to assess, diagnose, treat, and evaluate patients or in support of patient care.

Performance as a teacher, as a clinician, as a scholar, as an administrator, and as an individual is valued greatly by any university, for in these five (5) ways its work is chiefly done.

E. Responsibilities

The Office of the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs is responsible for the administration of this policy. Department chairperson and deans of colleges are responsible for implementation.

F. Procedures

  1. At the departmental level, department chairs shall have first responsibility for academic workload assignments for all individuals holding academic appointments in their respective departments/programs. The department chair shall approve these assignments, certify compliance with teaching workload policies described in 3.2.3 and report to the dean or director.
  2. At the college or division level, the dean or director is responsible for instructional and other teaching workload assignments. The dean or division director shall approve these assignments, certify compliance with academic workload policies and report to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs.
  3. Each college shall be held responsible for compliance with these academic duties. This compliance shall be assessed every academic year. If a college is found to be out of compliance, the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs shall take appropriate steps to address the noncompliance and to prevent such noncompliance in the future.

G. Review

The Divisional Head for this policy is the Provost. This policy shall be reviewed every five years or sooner if necessary by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in consultation with the Faculty Senate.
