4.28.4 Licensure, Credentialing, CPR

A. Purpose

To define the requirements for licensing, credentialing and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification of required UTT employees.

B. Persons Affected

This policy covers all employees of The University of Texas at Tyler and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler (collectively, the “University”).

D. Policy

  1. Professional Licensure/Certifications, including CPR
    1. Any employee who is required by job function to obtain and/or maintain professional licensure must keep current documentation of the licensure and provide a copy to Human Resources:
      1. initially (upon hire or when license is obtained);
      2. at dates of renewal; or
      3. any time requested by Human Resources or department leadership.
    2. Licensure is verified through Primary Source Verification by Human Resources prior to a new employee starting work and/or prior to expiration of an existing license.
    3. Nursing licensure must be valid in the State of Texas in order to begin work.  Nurses holding a Compact State license may work for up to thirty days on the compact license.
    4. Any employee who is required by job function to obtain and/or maintain a certification must keep current documentation of the certification and provide a copy to Human Resources:
      1. initially (upon hire or when certification obtained);
      2. at dates of renewal; or
      3. any time requested by Human Resources or department leadership.
    5. All CPR certifications must be obtained through The American Heart Association or The American Red Cross.
  2. General Compliance Awareness Training (GCAT)
    1. All employees are required to complete general compliance and awareness training provided by UTT no later than June 30th of each year. Human Resources monitors compliance, with a passing score of 80% or above.
  3. Specialized Compliance Training
    1. Any employee who is required by job function to obtain and/or maintain current specialized compliance training must do so no later than June 30th of each year or as required for new employees, with a passing score of 90% or above. Specialized compliance training may include modules on emerging compliance issues such as Time and Effort, Medical Billing Compliance, Endowments, Patient Privacy, Contracting, Quality, Safety, Information Technology Security, SAMA, or any other job-related training. Training records shall be maintained in Human Resources.
  4. Tuberculosis Surveillance/Fit Testing
    1. All UTT employees are required to obtain and/or maintain annual TB surveillance and/or fit testing, as necessary and appropriate for their jobs. (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134).
  5. Failure to Comply
    1. Failure to comply with the above requirements will result in a Leave Without Pay Status (LWOP) for up to five (5) working days at the employee's own expense. The employee will not be allowed to work until valid proof of current licensure/certification or renewal of training or testing has been provided to Human Resources. Failure to provide current proof may result in termination of employment.
