2.11.5 Campus Assessment, Response and Evaluation (CARE) Team

A. Purpose

The Campus Assessment, Response and Evaluation Team (previously recognized as the Behavioral Intervention Team) for the academic campus strives to promote an individual’s wellbeing and success.

B. Persons Affected

All employees, faculty, staff, students, volunteers, contractors, patients, or other visitors of the University of Texas at Tyler and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler (collectively, the “University”).

C. Definitions

Campus Assessment, Response, and Evaluation (CARE) Team: The CARE team exists to help members of the campus community who are emotionally distressed or demonstrating behaviors that are currently or potentially harmful to themselves or others.

D. Policy

The University will maintain a CARE Team with the goal of providing an environment where individuals are free to work, learn, and teach, unencumbered and uninhibited by threats of intimidation or harm.

E. Responsibilities

The CARE Team will be composed of representatives from a variety of University departments and invites other colleagues on an as-needed basis. The CARE Team members that are represented at the weekly meetings include the following:

  • Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students (Chair)
  • Associate Dean of Students
  • Assistant Dean of Students
  • Case Manager for CARE
  • Chief of Police
  • Assistant Chief of Police
  • Director of Student Conduct
  • Executive Director of Academic Success
  • Executive Director of University Communities
  • University Counseling Center Counselor
  • Assistant Director of Student Accessibility and Resources
  • Associate Vice President of HR (Adhoc Member for employee related concerns)

F. Procedures

The CARE Team engages in proactive and collaborative approaches to identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with students exhibiting concerning behaviors or thoughts, or facing hardships. By partnering with members of the community, the BIT/CARE Team strives to promote an individual student’s wellbeing and success.

G. Review

This policy shall be reviewed every five years, or sooner if necessary, by members of the Dean of Students, Associate Dean of Students, and the Chief of Police.
