COMD 5355 Clinical Practicum-Advanced

During this advanced clinical practicum course, students will continue accruing clinical hours toward completion of the 400 hours required by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) for certification in speech-language pathology. As a prerequisite for enrolling in COMD 5355, students must have successfully completed COMD 5354 Clinical Practicum-Initial. Students will repeat COMD 5355 as needed until they complete all 400 hours. However, only 6 COMD 5355 credit hours will count toward the master’s degree. Students begin taking this course for the first time in the spring of their first year. After that, they can take it in the summer of their first year, and as needed in the fall and spring of their second year.

When taking this course for the first time, students complete some of the hours at the SLP Graduate Program’s SLHC, where each student will work directly with patients providing diagnostic and therapy services under the supervision of a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist. The SLHC is housed within the Family Medicine Unit at the Health Science Center. The SLHC is the SLP Graduate Program’s clinical education facility and all speech-language pathology supervisors are employees of the Graduate Program. As this is an advanced practicum course, students will receive supervision only 25% of the time, which is the minimum amount of supervision required by ASHA.
