NURS 5357 Neurobiology Overview: Mental Health and Illness
This foundational course is designed for advanced practice nurses specializing in the care of individuals with mental and substance use disorders. Emphasizing a neurobiological perspective, the course explores key mental disorders across the lifespan. It examines multifactorial causes, including developmental, genetic, injury, trauma, infection, and neurodegeneration. The course also delves into the maintenance of homeostasis within the mind-body relationship, with a focus on the neurobiological underpinnings of mental disorders. Students will integrate neurobiological principles with psychopharmacological treatment modalities and pharmacogenomics, analyze the neurobiological mechanisms of psychotropic drugs, and develop strategies to enhance patient care through a deeper understanding of neurobiology.
