Department of Literature and Languages
Dr. Ann Beebe, Chair
The Department of Literature and Languages strives to expand students' awareness of, and sensitivity to, human beings as expressed in their literatures, languages, ideas, values, and philosophies. Through the teaching of English, and selected foreign languages, the department aims to enhance student abilities for critical reading, thinking, and writing and in the evaluation of fundamental assumptions and concepts that shape language and discourse formation. By enhancing the quality of faculty, the curricula, the effectiveness of its support services, and the quality of its graduates, the department aligns with the University's mission to foster students’ intellectual growth, promote competent and ethical professionalism, increase their understanding of their value in East Texas and in a global society, and embrace their role as responsible citizens.
