COMD 5671 Advanced Clinical Practicum- Externship 2

During the spring semester of their second year in the program (after having successfully passed COMD 5354, 5355, 5368, 5369, and 5670), students will participate in their second full-time off-campus externship placement. This externship placement is meant to provide students with a full-time work experience.

Students will continue working to complete part of their 400 total clinical clock hours at their assigned clinical externship site. They will continue engaging in the direct diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of communication and swallowing disorders in children and adults. In accordance with ASHA Certification Standards, a student will receive supervision at least 25% of the time. In addition to direct SLP services, student clinicians will have hands-on experience with clinical documentation, billing, and patient/family counseling. They will conduct self-assessment and will be evaluated weekly by their external site supervisor.

it is expected that the student spend 30-35 hours per week there. The purpose of this course is to provide the student with a full-time clinical position (under the supervision of their clinical instructor at their assigned site). Students take only 2 other academic courses concurrently with this externship.

The placement will be assigned based on factors including but not limited to the student's past performance in their previous clinical courses (COMD 5354, 5355, 5368, 5369, 5670), their remaining clinical clock hours and patient populations required, the student's preferences, and availability of externship sites.

This course is not taken on a graded basis. Using evaluation forms that document the acquisition of clinical knowledge and skills provided by our accrediting body, student's progress will be tracked by their clinical supervisor in conjunction with UT Tyler's SLP Coordinator of Clinical Education. Should the student fail to acquire the expected clinical knowledge and skills by the end of this clinical externship, this course may be repeated.
