NURS 4311 Nursing in Nontraditional Environments (NiNE)
Students will acquire basic understanding and skills required to provide professional nursing care in austere settings, including remote locations, disasters, and global health missions. Fieldcraft and survival skills (e.g., building fires and shelters, purifying water) using limited resources to provide basic sustainment for an extended time will be taught. The course culminates with a high-fidelity overnight search and rescue simulation. Students can obtain three national certifications as part of the course: Wilderness Life Support for Medical Professionals, FEMA Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and Essentials of Disaster Life Support.
