COMD 3318 Language Acquisition and Development

This course focuses on normal language acquisition and development through the life span. It describes acquisition of speech, language, perceptual, motor, and cognitive milestones during the prenatal, postnatal, and early childhood stages. It also discusses the factors influencing the nature language acquisition and development throughout the lifespan and describes the various stages of development. The course also addresses the interrelationships among linguistic, neurophysiological, physical, cognitive, social, and cultural factors as they affect language acquisition and development. Students will become familiar with 5 parameters of language (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics (social communication), stages of language acquisition and development, and techniques for collecting and analyzing a language samples.
