4.21.1 Employee Recognition and Service Awards Program

A. Purpose

The University has established an Employee Service Awards Program to recognize service to the institution and to honor and express to employees its appreciation for their service to The University of Texas at Tyler. The program was established to develop within the ranks of employees at The University of Texas at Tyler a spirit of loyal and deep-rooted feeling of being a part of the institution.

On an annual basis, employees who have achieved a recognized service anniversary the preceding August 31st of each five-year period of continuous UT Tyler service are recognized. Questions of length of service are resolved by the Office of Human Resources.

The Office of Human Resources will verify eligibility and submit to the Office of the President those employees eligible for recognition.


  1. A tangible award may be presented to an employee in recognition of years of service by his or her department head or another appropriate administrative official. The cost of awards will not exceed $100 per employee.
  2. Eligibility for recognition shall be determined by the Office of Human Resources based upon the service record contained in the official employee file.
  3. Eligible Service

    1. Includes all UT Tyler service as a regular employee (i.e., half-time or more appointment for at least 4-1/2 months). Accordingly, 10 years of service at 50% time would equal 10 years of service, not 5 years.
    2. Faculty are included in the program. A nine-month appointment would constitute one year of service under the program. [NOTE: Any staff appointed for nine months (September through May) would also be granted credit for one year of service.]
    3. Excludes:
      1. service performed as casual labor or temporary employee
      2. service as a student employee
      3. service with any other agency of the State of Texas
      4. service with any other University of Texas System component institution.

F. Review

This policy shall be reviewed by Human Resources every five years or as legislation changes.
